The inner workings of a dancer, recently found. In the ultimate dance craze in the first of her days, and definitely sure not to be her last.

Video Contest Polling

Okay, so I know it’s been forever since I’ve updated this thing and I forever apologize. Lots of things have been happening in the dance world for me, yet not enough.

I raised almost $1,000 in less than a week for Dance Marathon. It was an amazing experience and dancing with Entropy was a blast with that crowd.

Tickets to the “Dance for a Difference” Showcase that Entropy is hosting on April 14th at Appalachian State University are on sale at http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?organ_val=21217

Now I’m here because my dance crew entered a video contest to get free tickets to an amazing workshop on Sunday and get some money towards our local Hospitality House. If you want to help, PLEASE GO VOTE AT http://apps.facebook.com/opinionpolls/poll?pid=AB-Px8EV7yk

Our video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KnysPb4gnQ

AND IT’S MY BIRTHDAY TOMORROW!!! ALL I WANT IS VOTES!

Thanks for the love, we really appreciate it!!!!

This is why we do it!
I got this in my inbox a few days ago, and debated posting it. Simply because sometimes there are personal things that you experience in life that you want to keep personal and close to you. But after some debate, I decided this was a story that needed to be shared.
One of our friends recently returned from a trip to Honduras. She was able to apply what she’s learned in optometry school to give free eye care to some people in Honduras. While there, she realized how little the people had there, but at the same time how happy they were. Still, she felt compelled to do more to help out the people over there.
She told me of how More Than Dance helped inspire her to not only look at how little the people of Honduras had, but to actually do something about it. Honestly, she already is, she’s found that she has a passion for eye care and found a way to serve people through this passion.
She sent me this picture of her and this little girl. She said that when she put the glasses on this little girl, her face just lit up. She just so happened to be wearing a More Than Dance shirt that day.
To me, this picture says so much. It encompasses my whole idea and reason for starting this program. Sure we dance, have workshops, and post about 50 million videos a week haha. But I want people to look beyond the dance. Dance is just the tool that is being used to hopefully inspire the people that take our classes, buy our shirts, and watch our videos to go out and make the world better.
And not just blindly go out and try to change the world, but take the time to personally find out their own passion, what they are good at, what they live for, and turn that into a way of serving people.
This was a real personal note from myself as we prepare for Prelude and other workshops in the coming months. We love the dance, the expression of creativity, putting together these events, all of it we love. But ultimately, I want everyone who takes apart in what we do to not only enjoy what we do, but on a deeper level, strive to look deep down in themselves and find their own passions. And after finding their passion, work to somehow turn that into making someone else’s life better. Even if that means using your passion to put a smile on someones face.

This is Kentrell Newton’s newest video on his new youtube channel. He’s from Swagger Crew that was on America’s Best Dance crew and he taught at the first Kodachrome NC workshop at Wake Forest. His Just Kid Clothing line will be selling at the dance showcase my crew is hosting in April, the First Annual “Dance for a Difference” Charity Showcase

So touched, so nervous, and yet so excited! It would be UNBELIEVABLE to reach $1000, not only for the charities but also because a Kodachrome Dance Marathon would be seriously outrageous! Donate now!

kodachromeva:

KODACHROME. If each person just donates $1 each towards BT Nguyen’s dance marathon, that will be money for the kids who need it!

Her goal is $500. There are 3 days left. Donate here.

If BT reaches $500:
KODACHROME will raffle off 2 tickets for one person to Prelude DMV ($30 for 2 tickets/March 3-4).

If BT reaches $750:
KODACHROME will raffle off one 5678 shirt to one person ($25) and one KCVA hoodie to another person ($40).

If BT reaches $1000:

BT Nguyen has baked for KODACHROME VA and KODACHROME NC workshops. Let’s show her our support!

Her words:
“I am truly blessed to have found my Kodachrome family and have them to dance with, support me, teach me, and love me. And I am always thankful everyday for all of the different families that I have and have grown up with. I thank all my friends, family, mentors, colleagues, teams, etc. for shaping me into the person that I am today and allowing me to grow. I am so glad that I have found dance and am so happy every time I hear that people can see that too.”

So it’s been 11 hours since I started working on Dance Marathon things this morning. I said earlier how I had been meaning to rewrite the letter that the registration websites put up for you when you sign up - I finally did it and 11 hours later, I have raised $235. They suggest that you raise $150. It’s a 15-hour event, that’s basically $10/hour. And now, I’m shooting for $500. It was my original goal and I didn’t think it would be possible with such short notice, the Dance Marathon being on Saturday and all, but I’ve already passed it! I’m still really really excited and want to push so hard to get $500 by Saturday morning.

In celebration of raising this much money, and because I should have done it a long time ago anyway, I’m gonna upload a video for you. I hope you enjoy and tell all your friends and family to donate to Dance Marathon!

Please read this. I know it’s long but it would mean a lot to me. Skim it over if you like, just give me a few minutes of your time.

So I know I’m really bad at updating this blog, but I can’t help it that life is happening all at the same time as I’m trying to dance, finish my last semester, and do research. I wish I could just dance all the time and, I have to admit, it’s nice knowing that when I feel frustrated, all I want to do is dance. If that means feeling ridiculous while I try to krump, then that’s how I feel. If that’s doing some sort of flowy movement of my gymnastics/ballet background, then great! If it’s putting my focus on something new like choreography or b-girling and top-rocking, then hellz yeah.

I’ve been meaning to write this entry for months now - literally since December in the least. But hey, I wanted it to be good! I’m actually in between writing a paper for class right now and cramming for my next test tomorrow morning and so I’m gonna try and write this quickly because I know it has to get done. Maybe my rushed-ness will make this more concise and compact for you and you haven’t wasted your life on it.

I have fallen in love with dance.

Since this is my senior year, I’ve been doing things that I haven’t gotten to do before - I joined several dance teams/crews which is why I started this blog in the first place! I am doing Dance Marathon this year and it will be my first year doing so! I’m excited because it goes to great causes, all that touch close to my heart, and it’s going to be so much fun. Going into this year and making plans for the next (or trying to, at least), I’ve been thinking a lot about the kind of person that I want to be.

I want to be nice.
I want to be sincere and authentic and true.
I want to be a good person.
I want to help others.
I want to dance.
I want to find a way to help others by doing the things that I love.

I am truly blessed to have found my Kodachrome family and have them to dance with, support me, teach me, and love me. And I am always thankful everyday for all of the different families that I have and have grown up with. I thank all my friends, family, mentors, colleagues, teams, etc. for shaping me into the person that I am today and allowing me to grow. I am so glad that I have found dance and am so happy every time I hear that people can see that too.

In any case, I would be so extremely entirely grateful for any donations that would help support Dance Marathon and my quest to dance for 15 straight hours. I know I can do it, it’s what I want to be doing anyway =)  I wanted to raise $500, because I wanted to go above and beyond. I’ve NEVER in my life done a fundraiser. I went through elementary school with those catalogs in my backpack, looking through them and never going around selling anything because I never felt like I had a network to go to. But now I do. And even though the Dance Marathon is on Saturday from 11am to 2am, I want to raise money. I know it’s late and I understand if you don’t want to give or don’t want to give much, but I don’t know if I could really express to you how much it would mean to me.

The goal to raise is $150 by Saturday and it’s super easy. Just go online to www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/btnguyen and donate. If you want to learn more about the Dance Marathon, you can click the first link from this post and read all about it! You can bet your buns that I’ll be getting videos of the night and Entropy Dance Crew is even performing and teaching at the marathon. I can’t wait!

I really hope that you’ll help me in this endeavor. $150 for 15 hours of dancing - that’s $10 an hour for dancing. That’s 15 friends that will sponsor me for 1 hour for $10. Or 30 friends for $5 each - that’s like, a trip to Starbucks! I know my friend Emily Adjoa (Adjoa Skinner) raised $10,000 for her music career and she made it! I was so proud and so it gives me hope that I can raise $150 for Dance Marathon.

I’m sorry if this post ended up being long anyway but I hope if you read this that you will seriously consider giving. Hell, if I meet $500, I would probably cry. And I’d make a choreography for you and post it to thank you! And that means a lot to me because I still have yet to choreograph a piece yet - I could make it my first official one.

I have fallen in love with dance and, on this day, I want to share it so that I can help serve others.

Thank you for everything already and thank you for your time, donations, love, and support.

Love,
BT

Entropy: Popping Workshop

November 6th, 2011

Shortly after I joined Entropy, they held a dance workshop on popping. That’s another dance style. Just look up the video of N*Sync’s “Dirty Pop” and that’s kinda what I’m getting at. We learned a short bit to Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3X” which is a fun song. It was a really great turn out of people and it was nice seeing Entropy getting their name out on the campus community. I can’t wait for them/us to do more workshops and classes and stuff.

There was a fun little session after the workshop where people stayed after and messed around with dance moves. I wanna learn so much! I’m looking forward to the next workshop.

If you wanna see the gist of what we did, just watch the Chris Brown “Yeah 3X” video and pay special attention to the part with Poppin’ Pete. It was a lot of fun and my first time ever popping.

Edit: Fine… Someone from Kodachrome corrected me and said that this is a better example of popping. I was hoping to save this for later but it’s relevant. And of great quality. I love my Kodachrome family.
